Closing the gap is a very loose term that is promoted within Corporate, State and Commonwealth Australia. It is important that we as ABORIGINAL people recognise that we have a role to play and take direct responsibility for our own outcomes – That may mean a commitment to Training, Employment and being the best in which you can be personally. Not all of you will want to go to University, but there are many more opportunities out there than that.
KENJARHY has been created as a vehicle to deliver a range of services too and for Aboriginal Australia as well as corporate entities as that is who holds the key through employment and contracting opportunities. We have aimed to create our own environment, an environment that Indigenous Australians want to be part of . Not the factional in fighting that haults our progress in achieving our goals.
I am sure that you all would look up to an Indigenous person in the community or strive to achieve to what they are doing in making a real difference. People such as Jamie Newman – Orange Aboriginal Medical Service CEO – He is making a difference, a tangible difference, changing lives and the perception that people in Orange and surrounding districts have of Aboriginal people, by offering services to mainstream Australia and not segregating. This is important.
By us doing this we will have corporate Australia wanting to invest in Indigenous companies or enterprises and this will create a plethora of opportunities to Aboriginal people. Aboriginal people do not want “Handouts”, but rather assistance to demonstrate the talents in which we all have personally.
This will allow us to “Close the Gap” ourselves, and create Wealth for our people in the form of jobs.
To get the jobs we need to also commit to being trained and educated in areas of growth and hence this is why KENJARHY have now created its own TRAINING COMPANY (TRAIN 365) to address these and deliver Nationally Accredited training to both Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal people as this is important.
So I would like to challenge you all to assess where you want to be in 5 years time, set goals and align yourself to people who will assist you to achieve these goals.Brad Draper
